Why the App Store Is Growing Again, and Where AI Fits

AI is driving a new app store boom, and that changes the math for mobile teams

The mobile app market looked like it was heading toward consolidation. AI assistants were supposed to absorb app workflows, chat interfaces were supposed to flatten everything, and shipping another standalone utility was supposed to look a little obsolete.

But app releases are rising, fast.

According to Appfigures data reported this week, worldwide app releases across Apple’s App Store and Google Play jumped 60% year over year in Q1 2026. On iOS, releases were up 80%. April looks even steeper, with releases up 104% across both stores and 89% on iOS versus the same stretch last year.

The most likely reason is straightforward: AI coding tools have lowered the cost of building and shipping mobile software.

Not across the board. Not for every team. But enough to move store-wide numbers.

Why now

A couple of years ago, AI coding tools were decent for snippets and shaky at shipping. They could give you a UITableView example or a React component and leave the rest to you.

That gap has narrowed.

Tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Replit can now handle multi-file edits, project-wide refactors, tests, and framework-aware scaffolding well enough to get an app from idea to buildable prototype in hours. For the kinds of apps that fill app stores, that matters.

Ask for a SwiftUI habit tracker with SwiftData, WidgetKit, local reminders, and AppIntents, and you have a fair shot at getting a project that compiles with models, views, and system integrations wired together. Same on Android with Jetpack Compose, Room, WorkManager, Hilt, and Material 3.

The code often needs work. Sometimes a lot of it. But the old startup cost is clearly lower.

Modern app frameworks also happen to fit text-to-code generation pretty well. Declarative UI systems like SwiftUI, Jetpack Compose, and, to a lesser extent, React Native and Flutter, are easier for LLMs to produce than older imperative UI code. State goes in familiar places. View hierarchies follow repeatable patterns. Actions mutate models in predictable ways. It’s structured enough for generation and flexible enough to be useful.

Backend tooling helps too. Firebase, Supabase, Appwrite, and Cloudflare Workers plus D1 remove a lot of plumbing. If auth, storage, sync, push, and analytics come from well-documented services with typed SDKs or OpenAPI specs, code assistants are much more likely to produce something that actually runs.

A bunch of boring improvements stacked together can move a market. That’s what this looks like.

The categories fit the tooling

Games still dominate overall volume, but the mix is shifting. Utilities, productivity, lifestyle, and health and fitness are now in the top tier.

That tracks with what AI-assisted development is good at right now.

These categories usually have a few things in common:

  • straightforward interfaces
  • familiar CRUD-style data models
  • standard API integrations
  • templated onboarding and subscription flows
  • little need for custom graphics engines or deep low-level optimization

A solo developer can now ship a decent note app, tracker, planner, habit tool, or SaaS companion app much faster than they could in 2023 or 2024. Fast enough that weaker ideas still become worth testing.

That’s the shift. AI doesn’t have to produce perfect software to change the market. It just has to make small bets cheap.

For startups, shipping five niche utilities in a quarter may now be rational. For established web companies that kept putting off mobile because native work was too slow or too expensive, the calculus has changed too. A mobile client with offline support, push notifications, and a light on-device ML feature no longer has to eat an entire quarter.

The "AI will replace apps" argument is still early

A lot of people in the industry still argue that assistants will replace apps at the UX layer. Carl Pei has made that case. OpenAI’s hardware work with Jony Ive keeps the idea alive. And over time, ambient AI interfaces could take over a lot of app interactions.

That still leaves the current platform reality.

If you need payments, notifications, background tasks, widgets, local storage, camera access, health data hooks, or deep OS integrations, you’re still building apps. Even assistant-driven products need software that talks to the operating system cleanly and securely.

Greg Joswiak’s recent comment that reports of the App Store’s decline were exaggerated was self-serving. It was also helped by the data. App stores still matter because mobile operating systems still matter, and they are still the shortest path to distribution.

That may change later. It hasn’t changed yet.

What AI is compressing

The biggest gain is not full app generation. Outside narrow cases, that claim still doesn’t hold up.

What AI does compress is the messy middle:

  • project scaffolding
  • data models
  • common UI flows
  • integration boilerplate
  • test stubs
  • release scripting
  • store metadata prep
  • repetitive refactors

One engineer can now get surprisingly far on features that used to need a small team or a lot of patience. On iOS, that might mean a SwiftUI app with iCloud sync, App Intents for Siri or Shortcuts, and a small Core ML classifier for note tagging. On Android, it could be a Compose app with local persistence via Room, background sync with WorkManager, dependency injection via Hilt, and pagination using Paging 3.

That’s real productivity. It’s also easy to oversell.

Senior engineers still matter. Their time just shifts toward architecture, review, security, performance, release hygiene, and deciding which generated code should be deleted instead of patched.

That last part matters a lot. AI makes code cheap to produce and expensive to trust.

The ugly part

App review and security are about to get worse.

A release boom sounds healthy until you account for the junk, fraud, and cloned software that follows. Apple has already had recent failures here. It pulled Freecash for rules violations. A malicious Ledger Live clone reportedly made it through review and stole $9.5 million. Those aren’t weird edge cases when AI tools make it easier to copy interfaces, tweak branding, and mass-produce near-duplicates.

Store moderation gets much harder when submission cost is heading toward zero.

That hits legitimate developers too. Discovery degrades as category pages fill with copycats, ASO gets commoditized, and paid acquisition gets more expensive when too many teams chase the same keywords. Apple Search Ads gets worse in a crowded category. So does Google Play search.

For developers, faster shipping doesn’t mean better odds. It means more competition.

What teams should do

If you’re shipping mobile apps in this cycle, the important technical decisions are pretty plain.

Choose a stack that minimizes surprises. For iOS-first work, SwiftUI plus SwiftData, App Intents, and WidgetKit is the obvious route if you want tight OS integration and a workable path for on-device ML through Core ML. On Android, Jetpack Compose, Room, WorkManager, and Hilt are still the strongest defaults for teams that care about maintainability.

Cross-platform still makes sense when it fits the team. React Native with Expo is a good choice for strong JavaScript shops. Flutter still has an edge when UI consistency matters more than feeling native. Kotlin Multiplatform is useful when shared business logic matters but you still want native UI. There’s no universal winner, and AI tooling won’t rescue a bad stack decision.

Automate release work early. Use fastlane, GitHub Actions, Expo EAS, or Gradle workflows before the app gets complicated. Store submission friction piles up quickly. If the pipeline is manual, whatever speed you gained with AI gets lost in the last mile.

And review generated code like you expect it to be wrong, because sometimes it fails in exactly the ways that hurt production apps:

  • NSAllowsArbitraryLoads = true sneaking into Info.plist
  • hardcoded API keys
  • weak randomness instead of SecRandomCopyBytes
  • sloppy in-app purchase handling
  • client-side receipt validation with no server checks
  • brittle retry logic around sync or billing calls

Run the boring tools. swiftlint, detekt, dependency audits, SAST checks, secret scanning. AI-generated mobile code often looks competent until you inspect the security, networking, and persistence layers.

On-device AI is part of this, with limits

One reason productivity and utility apps are getting easier to ship is that lightweight on-device inference is finally usable for narrow jobs. With Core ML, Apple’s MLX, and ONNX Runtime Mobile, developers can add local classifiers, rerankers, summarizers, or tagging models without sending every user action to a cloud API.

That helps with privacy and latency. It also keeps a $4.99 utility from turning into a margin problem.

There are still hard limits. Model size, memory use, battery cost, and accuracy all shape what belongs on-device. For plenty of apps, a hybrid setup will still be the better answer: local inference for obvious tasks, cloud calls for heavier reasoning.

A lot of teams are going to overdo this and ship "AI features" that are expensive to run and too flimsy to keep.

Cheaper to enter, harder to win

That’s the tension underneath these App Store numbers.

AI is making mobile development easier in a literal, practical sense. It’s easier to scaffold apps, wire up backends, integrate platform services, and get something publishable into TestFlight or the Play Console.

It also means the stores fill up with quicker experiments, rougher code, more clones, and more noise. The bar for building has dropped. The bar for earning trust has not.

If you run a web product and still treat mobile as a someday project, this is a cheap entry window. If you’re already in mobile, getting to market is the easier part now. Staying visible and staying clean is where the work has moved.

What to watch

The caveat is that agent-style workflows still depend on permission design, evaluation, fallback paths, and human review. A demo can look autonomous while the production version still needs tight boundaries, logging, and clear ownership when the system gets something wrong.
