Google's A2A Protocol Explained: A Standard for Multi-Agent AI Systems

Google’s A2A protocol gives AI agents a way to talk to each other, and that’s a bigger deal than it sounds

Google has introduced a new Agent-to-Agent, or A2A, protocol alongside updates to its Agent Development Kit. The goal is straightforward: let AI systems work with each other as software actors instead of treating every workflow like a single chatbot wrapped around tool calls.

That sounds like a small distinction. It isn't. Most current AI stacks still center on one model calling tools, APIs, or databases inside a controlled loop. A2A goes after a different problem: how one agent finds another, figures out what it can do, opens a conversation, and hands off work across multiple turns.

If MCP helped standardize how models talk to tools, A2A is Google's attempt to standardize how agents talk to other agents.

Why Google built another protocol

Developers already have enough protocol churn in AI, so A2A needs to justify itself.

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is for structured access to external capabilities. Databases, internal systems, search endpoints, weather APIs, CRM connectors. A model or agent requests something, the server returns predictable data, often JSON. It's tool plumbing. Useful and intentionally dull.

A2A sits above that layer.

It's for situations where the system on the other side has memory, state, goals, and its own decision process. That system might need clarification. It might negotiate timing, reject a request, ask for credentials, propose a different plan, or send progress updates while work is in flight.

Plain tool-calling abstractions don't handle that well.

Google's bet is that enterprises will end up with a lot of these agents. Procurement agents, research agents, security review agents, scheduling agents, internal assistants tied to different data silos. Once that happens, the lack of a common communication layer turns into an actual engineering problem.

A2A is an attempt to solve that before every company builds its own brittle version.

A conservative technical stack, in a good way

One of the better parts of A2A is that Google didn't invent weird transport machinery.

Under the hood, Google says A2A uses:

  • HTTP for transport
  • JSON-RPC 2.0 for message exchange
  • Server-Sent Events (SSE) for streaming and real-time updates
  • A JSON-based Agent Card for capability discovery
  • Built-in authentication and authorization hooks for enterprise use

Those are sensible choices.

HTTP runs on existing infrastructure. JSON-RPC 2.0 gives messages a clear request-response shape without dragging developers into a fresh schema mess. SSE is less flashy than WebSockets, but for many enterprise workflows it's the better call. Easier to deploy, easier to debug, good enough for long-running task updates.

The Agent Card may matter most. It's a machine-readable description of what an agent is, what it can do, how to reach it, and what kind of interaction it supports. If that part catches on, developers get a common discovery model instead of hardcoding assumptions about every downstream agent.

That's how agent systems start looking less like demos and more like software.

MCP for tools, A2A for peers

Google's framing here is solid. Use MCP when you need structured access to a capability. Use A2A when you need collaboration between autonomous actors.

A weather endpoint is a tool. A planning assistant that interprets weather, checks schedules, coordinates with a travel-booking system, and revises plans after a delay alert is an agent.

That line won't always be clean. Some services will sit in the middle. Still, as a design rule, it works.

It also means teams that already invested in MCP don't need to rip out what they built. That's part of why this announcement matters. Google isn't replacing tool integrations. It's putting A2A on top of them for the coordination layer that gets messy fast.

A practical flow looks like this:

  1. A user asks an orchestrator agent to plan an offsite.
  2. That agent queries weather and venue data through MCP-connected tools.
  3. It opens A2A conversations with a travel agent, scheduling agent, and budgeting agent.
  4. Those agents exchange updates, negotiate constraints, and return progress or blockers over multiple turns.

That's closer to how work actually happens inside companies.

The interesting part is interoperability

The obvious cynical read is that Google is dressing up its own agent stack as a protocol. That risk is always there. But A2A looks more serious because Google is pitching it as an open, cross-framework protocol, not just a feature inside its own runtime.

According to the source material, Google says A2A already lines up with frameworks like LangChain, CrewAI, and LangGraph, and it's working with enterprise partners including Salesforce, SAP, MongoDB, Neo4j, Accenture, and Deloitte.

Some of that is standard partner-slide theater. Still, the compatibility claim matters because agent systems are already fragmented. One team builds in LangGraph, another uses Google ADK, another wraps internal services in homegrown orchestration. Without a common protocol, every cross-agent interaction becomes custom integration work.

That doesn't scale. It barely gets through a pilot.

If A2A gets traction, it could cut down one of the worst parts of agent engineering right now: stitching together multiple intelligent services that all make different assumptions about context, task state, handoff, and auth.

Where it helps

The lab assistant example from the source is a good one.

Imagine a research agent that queries scientific literature, summarizes likely experimental paths, and coordinates with a lab equipment agent. The literature lookup is classic MCP territory. Query a database, get structured results, move on.

The lab equipment side is different. The machine agent may need to reserve time, confirm setup parameters, report that a reagent is missing, suggest an alternative protocol, and send updates as the experiment progresses. That's a stateful conversation under changing conditions. A2A fits better there.

The same pattern shows up across enterprise systems:

  • A finance agent asks a compliance agent whether a proposed vendor contract needs escalation
  • A support agent hands a technical issue to a debugging agent that can request logs and ask follow-up questions
  • A sales assistant delegates a pricing exception request to an approval agent with its own policy logic

The old API model handles the simple path. Multi-agent work needs a looser, more conversational layer.

The hard part: trust, cost, and control

A2A looks clean on paper because messaging standards are the easy part.

The harder questions are the ones enterprise teams care about.

Security and identity

If agents can discover each other and delegate work, identity becomes central. Which agent can ask for what? Can it act on behalf of a user? Can it pass credentials downstream? How is scope restricted? What gets logged?

Google says A2A includes enterprise-grade authentication and authorization, which is necessary and still vague. The details matter. In practice, most enterprise deployments will need tight policy enforcement, auditable traces, and clear boundaries around delegated authority. A network of semi-autonomous agents gets messy fast if auth is loose.

Cost and latency

Multi-turn agent coordination sounds elegant until every task turns into a committee meeting.

A2A could make systems more capable. It could also make them slower and more expensive if teams start decomposing every workflow into five model-backed services talking in circles. Distributed systems already taught this lesson. Agent systems are about to learn it again.

For plenty of tasks, one orchestrator plus a few deterministic tools is still the better design.

Reliability

Structured tool calls fail in fairly predictable ways. Agent conversations fail in messier ones. Misread intent, conflicting assumptions, endless clarification loops, silent handoff errors, overconfident summaries. A protocol can standardize transport. It can't standardize judgment.

So A2A doesn't remove the need for strong orchestration logic, observability, retries, guardrails, and task-level evaluation.

What developers should watch

For engineering teams, the immediate takeaway isn't to rebuild everything around A2A.

A few things matter now:

  • Keep treating tool access and agent collaboration as separate architectural concerns
  • Watch whether Agent Card discovery gets traction outside Google's own demos
  • Push vendors to explain auth, permissioning, and auditability in concrete terms
  • Be skeptical of agent decomposition that adds cost without improving outcomes
  • If you already use MCP-style patterns, look at where multi-turn delegation starts to strain your current setup

The best near-term use for A2A is probably bounded agent collaboration inside organizations that already have clear system boundaries and real workflow complexity. Research ops, IT automation, support triage, procurement, and compliance fit better than the usual vague general-assistant pitch.

Google also deserves credit for choosing familiar web primitives instead of building a protocol that only works inside its own stack. That gives A2A a shot. Not a guarantee. A shot.

The next test is simple: do independent framework authors and enterprise teams adopt it because it cuts integration pain, or does it stay a Google-shaped standard with a decent demo?

That answer won't come from launch material. It'll come from whether developers can wire heterogeneous agents together in production without burning months on adapters and auth glue. If A2A helps, people will use it. If it doesn't, it joins the pile of AI infrastructure ideas that looked inevitable for about a week.
