DMZ’s CAD 155K bet on AI startups points to a practical shift in creative software
Toronto’s DMZ Insiders event awarded CAD 155,000 to two AI startups during Toronto Tech Week: NextGen Sound, which took CAD 150,000 for an AI audio marketing platform, and ARKI, which won CAD 5,000 through the People’s Choice Award for software that helps teams reuse past design assets.
The funding amount is modest. The signal is still useful. Both companies are aimed at the same part of the market where applied AI keeps finding traction: creative work with expensive manual steps, messy asset libraries, and teams that care about speed and consistency.
Both also fit a category that keeps getting stronger. They aren’t pitching general-purpose copilots. They’re building vertical AI systems around a narrow workflow and burying most of the machine learning inside a product people can use without thinking about the stack underneath.
Why these startups are worth watching
NextGen Sound and ARKI serve different markets, but the technical pattern is familiar.
One turns prompts and brand constraints into audio assets such as soundtracks or sonic branding. The other searches old design work and suggests reusable assets inside architecture or 3D workflows. Different outputs, same basic recipe:
- encode unstructured input into embeddings
- retrieve relevant context from a large asset corpus
- generate or rank outputs against domain-specific constraints
- package the whole thing as a workflow tool instead of exposing raw model behavior
A lot of real AI adoption looks like this. Narrow products where retrieval, ranking, and generation cut hours out of repetitive work.
That’s also why smaller funding rounds can still matter. These products don’t need a frontier model built from scratch. They need a solid stack, good data pipelines, and enough product discipline to hold up in front of actual users.
Audio is still underrated, and probably more useful than it gets credit for
Generative audio gets less attention than image and text. Partly because the tooling is harder. Partly because the use cases don’t go viral in the same way. But for marketing teams, ad production shops, and product teams shipping branded media, audio is still a bottleneck.

The interesting engineering question is whether they can build a brand-conditioned generation pipeline that behaves predictably. That usually means some mix of:

Inference latency matters too. If this is an interactive creative tool, slow generation gets painful fast. ONNX, TensorRT, and job-queue-based async rendering aren’t glamorous, but this is where products either feel usable or feel like research demos.
There’s also a legal problem sitting underneath the product story. “Royalty-free” sounds neat until you ask how the training data was sourced, how outputs are checked for similarity, and whether provenance is logged. Audio companies will need better audit trails than many image startups got away with in 2023 and 2024.
ARKI fits a quieter, sturdier trend
ARKI’s pitch is less flashy, but it may have the better long-term business: help design teams reuse work they already paid for.
Anyone who’s worked around architecture, CAD, or 3D content pipelines knows the problem. Organizations pile up years of models, textures, annotations, layouts, and half-finished components. Most of it turns into dark matter. It exists, it cost money, and nobody can find it when the next project starts.
First and foremost, that’s a retrieval problem.
A plausible ARKI-style architecture looks like this:
- ingest design files such as
.skp,.obj, or related project data - extract features from geometry, materials, metadata, annotations, and context
- store vectors in an ANN index such as FAISS
- query with the current design context and return candidate reusable assets

This kind of workflow shows where embeddings help and where they stop helping. Pure vector search can return assets that are mathematically similar and practically useless. In design systems, users want relevance with explanation. They need to know why something was recommended, whether it’s approved, what project it came from, what constraints apply, and whether reusing it will save time or create cleanup work.
So these systems drift toward hybrid retrieval:
- vector similarity for semantic recall
- metadata filtering for compliance and context
- rule-based ranking for domain constraints
- human feedback to improve future results
That last part gets missed all the time. Engineers treat retrieval as solved once top-k results look decent in a notebook. In production, retrieval quality decays unless indexing, metadata hygiene, and feedback loops stay healthy. New assets arrive. Naming conventions drift. Teams change standards. Embeddings get stale. You need re-indexing schedules, versioning, and some way to check whether recommendations are actually being reused.
For technical leads, ARKI is a useful reminder that “AI for design” doesn’t have to mean generating buildings from prompts. It can mean cutting search friction across a badly organized asset estate. In plenty of companies, that’s the higher-value product.
Vertical AI keeps finding the clearer business case
The strongest takeaway from this funding news is pretty simple.
More startups are dropping the “assistant for everything” pitch and going straight to constrained domains where inputs, outputs, and success metrics are easier to define. That makes the engineering tractable and gives buyers a clearer reason to care.
Generic AI products struggle because users ask open-ended questions and expect judgment that still isn’t reliable. Vertical AI products can score themselves against concrete outcomes:
- Did the audio variant get approved faster?
- Did the campaign produce more usable creative options?
- Did the designer reuse an existing asset instead of rebuilding it?
- Did project turnaround time drop?
- Did retrieval lower billable labor on repetitive tasks?
Those are product metrics that connect to revenue. Investors like that. Enterprise buyers definitely do.
For builders, the center of gravity keeps moving away from model selection alone and toward system design:
- data ingestion and cleanup
- embedding quality and retrieval design
- orchestration between search, ranking, and generation
- observability for output quality
- access control and provenance
That work gets less attention than the latest model release. It’s still where durable software is built.
What developers should take from it
If you’re building internal tools or evaluating vendors, both startups point to the same practical playbook.
1. Start with retrieval
A lot of teams jump straight into generation because it demos well. Retrieval often delivers faster ROI. If your company is sitting on a huge pile of audio, design, video, code, or document assets, searchable embeddings plus decent metadata can pay off quickly.
2. Domain constraints beat raw model size
For creative tools, a smaller model wired into the right workflow can outperform a larger one that ignores production rules. Brand constraints, file compatibility, approval history, and auditability matter.
3. Build for review loops
Creative work is subjective. You need ranking, human approval, and feedback capture in the product. A model that produces ten options only helps if users can sort, annotate, reject, and refine them quickly.
4. Expect data quality to be ugly
Messy asset libraries, inconsistent tags, missing metadata, duplicate files, and bad naming conventions will hurt system quality more than most model choices. Plan for ingestion and normalization work early.
5. Treat security and permissions seriously
Design assets and marketing materials are often sensitive. Retrieval systems need tenant isolation, access controls, audit logs, and careful handling of derived embeddings. Too many teams still treat vectors like harmless metadata. They aren’t.
A small funding round, and a pretty clear direction
CAD 155,000 won’t shape the AI market by itself. It does point to where useful software keeps getting built: narrow domains, expensive workflows, and products that combine embeddings, retrieval, and generation without asking users to care about any of those layers.
NextGen Sound and ARKI are working on different problems, but the shift is the same. AI adoption looks increasingly like specialized software that understands the job, the files, and the constraints.
That’s a good place for builders to be.
What to watch
The main caveat is that an announcement does not prove durable production value. The practical test is whether teams can use this reliably, measure the benefit, control the failure modes, and justify the cost once the initial novelty wears off.
